Magnetospheric Scattering and Emission in Millisecond Pulsars

چکیده
We model the formation of magnetospheric components of millisecond pulsar light curves, deriving an approximate model for the curved space, ‘swept-back’ dipole field and following photon emission, propagation, and scattering. Magnetospheric pulse components are strongly affected by rapid rotation and Schwarzschild effects. Subject headings: stars:neutron—pulsars:general—magnetic fields

Comptonization in the X-ray Spectra of Radio Millisecond Pulsars
The majority of X-ray-detected rotationpowered millisecond pulsars (MSPs) appear to exhibit predominantly thermal emission, believed to originate from the heated magnetic polar caps of the pulsar. In the nearest MSP, J0437–4715 a faint PL is also observed at >3 keV, usually associated with magnetospheric emission processes. However, the hard emission in this and other similar MSPs may instead b...
متن کاملX - Ray Emission from the Planet Pulsar B 1257 + 12
We report the detection of the millisecond pulsar B1257+12 with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. In a 20 ks exposure we detected 25 photons from the pulsar, with energies between 0.4 and 2.0 keV, corresponding to the flux F X = (4.4 ± 0.9) × 10 −15 ergs s −1 cm −2 in this energy range. The X-ray spectrum can be described by a power-law model with photon index Γ ≈ 2.8 and luminosity L X ≈ 2.5 × 10...
متن کاملX-rays from Radio Millisecond Pulsars: Comptonized Thermal Radiation
X-ray emission from many rotation-powered millisecond pulsars (MSPs) is observed to be of predominantly thermal nature. In PSR J0437–4715, the nearest MSP known, an additional faint power-law tail is observed above 2.5 keV, commonly attributed to non-thermal magnetospheric radiation. We propose that the hard emission in this and other similar MSPs is instead due to weak Comptonization of the th...
متن کاملSynchrotron Self-Compton Emission from the Crab and Other Pulsars
Results of a simulation of synchrotron-self Compton (SSC) emission from a rotation-powered pulsar are presented. The radiating particles are assumed to be both accelerated primary electrons and a spectrum of electron-positron pairs produced in cascades near the polar cap. They follow trajectories in a slot gap using 3D force-free magnetic field geometry, gaining pitch angles through resonant cy...
متن کاملChandra Study of a Complete Sample of Millisecond Pulsars
We report Chandra observations of the complete sample of millisecond pulsars (MSPs) with precise radio positions in the globular clusters 47 Tuc (NGC 104) and NGC 6397. The x-ray luminosities and colors are derived or constrained and compared to x-ray MSPs previously detected in the field as well as one previously detected in a globular cluster (M28). The 47 Tuc MSPs are predominantly soft sour...
